Record what did not work — otherwise it gets tried again next quarter
Two abandoned approaches were independently re-proposed within six months of being dropped.
The record
Nobody writes up a failure with the enthusiasm they write up a win, so the corpus skews to things that worked and the same dead ends get re-explored. A closed project that produced a negative result files it as a memory with the conditions under which it failed — those conditions are what make it a finding rather than a complaint, and what lets someone judge whether their situation is different.
